Week 15: Bridge

The Ritz Carlton Hotel looms behind Sarasota’s signature Ringling Bridge on the John Ringling Causeway, and the Ringling Bridge looms behind the old bridge linking Coon Key to Bird Key on the causeway. The Ringling Bridge was a bone of contention in the community when it was proposed to replace the old drawbridge. The “new” bridge was built between 2001 and 2003, and now one wonders what all the fuss was about. It is used daily year round not only to move thousands of vehicles to the barrier islands, but also as an exercise route for walkers, joggers and bicyclists huffing and puffing across the 65-foot-high and 2,000-foot-long expanse. It replaces the old drawbridge that was built in 1959 and opened about 18 times a day, disrupting traffic flow to and from Bird Key, St. Armands Key and Longboat Key.
